36. How to win Divine Grace?

Our Saint Thirumoolar sings lovingly in this poem that we are able to think of God and cultivate devotion to God, due to the grace of God. Our scriptures proclaim, “God’s blessings bestows one the privilege to pray to Him.” We may think that we have made a decision to pray to God, and think that we are making our individual effort to seek His grace. Our Saint Thirumoolar says, that it is with the blessings of God can one think of praying to Him. To seek God’s grace, we need His blessings. We should pray that we are blessed by God to keep our mind away from swaying in other directions, and remain focused on God. Our Saint Thirumoolar sings about this joy, in this nectarine poem.

சிந்தை – mind or heart. எந்தை திருவடி – God’s lotus feet. The lotus feet of God is the boon that a devotee of God earns with God’s blessings.

Our Saint sings that he endeavors to keep God’s lotus feet always in his heart.

He clarifies that only because God blessed me by imprinting His lotus feet in my heart, I am able to constantly think of God! That is, due to God’s blessings, I am able to constantly pray to seek His grace.

அறியகி லன்ஆகில் – if God does not bless me. That is, if God does not shower His blessings on me.

– How would I ever receive God’s grace!

Our Saint sings here, that if my father (God) does not consider me as His son, and does not shower His blessings, I will struggle not knowing who my father is. Our Saint explains that unless God shower His blessings on the individual soul, the individual will not know the greatness of devotion to God, and might even waste the human life without seeking divine grace.

The true meaning of this song is that those who are devoted to God should not feel proud of themselves. On the contrary, they should remain humble while expressing their devotion to God, with gratitude that it was due to God’s blessings that they were able to do so. Our Saint Thirumoolar says that devotion to God is not something like an object that we offer to God! In fact, it is something that God has given us. Only with God’s blessings, will love for God blossom within us. The true devotees are expressing that love for God!

Upon receiving Divine Grace and experiencing bliss, our Saint Thirumoolar sings  about his experience in this song. He praises God who dwells in his heart, through the joy of seeing God with his inner eyes.

நேடிக்கொண்டு – selecting me as His instrument; என் உள்ளே – in my heart.  நேர்தரு – granting me His vision; நந்தியை- God (Siva).

Our Saint sings that it is not we who would search for God. God will select us and will come and reside in our hearts, and grant us His vision. He praises lovingly that God (Siva).

ஊடுபுக்கு – enter inside; யாரும் – no one among us; உணர்ந்தறி வாரில்லை – have not experienced. He stresses that devotion should be based on true experience.

Our Saint Thirumoolar sings wondering notwithstanding that God selects us and enters our heart and shines inside us, why many individuals do not make the effort to open their inner eyes to see Him within their hearts, and miss the golden opportunity to experience God!

He goes not share his personal experience.

கூடு – body; புக்கு – enter ஏறலுற் றேன் – I went inside my heart.

கோலங்கள் – the beautiful forms of divine; மூடிக்கண் டேன் – saw with my eyes closed.

I closed my eyes and meditated. I saw God’s beautiful forms. What happened next?

Our Saint sings that once he closed his eyes and meditated, he saw God with his inner eyes. He also saw that all the seven worlds are also within that Same God!
