34. Seeing the divine while serving a guest at home

 

Our Saint Thirumoolar sings about the blessings of serving a guest at home considering it as a form of worship.

தண்டுஅறு சிந்தை தபோதனார் தாம்மகிழ்ந்து

உண்டது மூன்று புவனமும் உண்டது

 

தண்டுஅறு சிந்தை – uninterrupted continuous meditation; தபோதனார்  - Saints who engage in such deep meditation; தாம்மகிழ்ந்து  உண்டது – when those saints enjoy a nicely cooked meal prepared by us; மூன்று புவனமும் உண்டது – the joy is equivalent to feeding the three worlds.

கொண்டது மூன்று புவனமும் கொண்டதுஎன்று

எண்திசை நந்தி எடுத்துரைத் தானே

கொண்டது – God who is present எண்திசை நந்தி – in all eight directions. God (Siva) who is omnipresent.

 

Our Saint Thirumoolar sings comparing the great joy and blessings of offering gifts to great Saints who engage in deep meditation. He sings that when these Saints accept anything from us, the blessings we get is equivalent to the joy one will get by feeding all the people in the three worlds! More importantly, our Saint Thirumoolar says that this fact was conveyed to him by none other than Siva (God), in the form of a guru.

 

தண்டுஅறு சிந்தை தபோதனார் தாம்மகிழ்ந்து

உண்டது மூன்று புவனமும் உண்டது

கொண்டது மூன்று புவனமும் கொண்டதுஎன்று

எண்திசை நந்தி எடுத்துரைத் தானே.  2

 

Our Saint Thirumoolar continues to sing the glory of the devotees of God. He also sings how God showered His blessings on him and adopted him as one of His instruments, even before he was born on this earth!

 

என்தாயோடு என்அப்பன் ஏழ்ஏழ் பிறவியும்

அன்றே சிவனுக்கு எழுதிய ஆவணம்

ஏழ்ஏழ் – seven births; several births. அன்றே – long time ago; ஆவணம் – a recorded contract or declaration.

 

Our Saint Thirumoolar says, “Even before I was born, it has been already concurred in writing that in each of my several births, my mother and father will be fully dedicated to God (Siva). He sings in exclamation, “I wonder who wrote this contract and who signed as witness?”.

ஒன்றாய் உலகம் படைத்தான் எழுதினான்

ஒன்றாய் – all the worlds உலகம் படைத்தான் – God who created the universe.

 

Our Saint sings, that God (as Brahma) who created the universe, must have written that contract that I will be a fully dedicated to Siva (God).

 

நின்றான் முகில்வண்ணன் நேர்எழுத் தாமே.  

நேர்எழுத் தாமே – standing as witness that I know the person writing the contract; முகில்வண்ணன் – God (as Vishnu who is dark as the rainy cloud).

Our Saint Thirumoolar sings in this poem “God (as Brahma) created the universe and the beings. At the very beginning, he had declared in writing that I will be devoted like as slave to God (as Siva). God (as Vishnu) who protects the universe and the beings, signed as witness for this declaration”.

 

என்தாயோடு என்அப்பன் ஏழ்ஏழ் பிறவியும்

அன்றே சிவனுக்கு எழுதிய ஆவணம்

ஒன்றாய் உலகம் படைத்தான் எழுதினான்

நின்றான் முகில்வண்ணன் நேர்எழுத் தாமே.  9

 

Our Saint conveys a sacred message that in all our births, it has been pre ordained that we will be devoted to God (Siva). The declaration is ancient as  as it is the divine command of God (as Brahma) the creator of the universe. It also remains unchanged over time, as per the witness confirmation by God (as Vishnu)the protector of the universe. Our Saint tells us that we should be elated to submit ourselves to this divine contract, because we will fulfill the purpose of human life be remaining a humble servant of God.
