33. Meditation and idol worship
Our meditation and devotion to God are expressed by worshipping an idol, with various procedures, both simple and elaborate. The main difference between the mental prayer to God through meditation and worshipping an idol can be seen from the procedures. Our Saint Thirumoolar sings in these poems about the significance and salient features of idol worship.
He says that worshipping an idol bestows God’s blessings steadily. Our Saint says that we are “fortunate when we become interested in worshipping”. He says for worshipping we merely need some flowers and water. These are easily available for anyone and everywhere.
அருள்புரி யாநிற்கும் – God knowingly showers His blessings.
எண்ணிலி பாவிகள் – countless poor sinners; நண்ணறி யாமல் – do not know how to come near to God.
Our Saint laments that due to past sins and ignorance, countless number of persons do not know how to get nearer to God with devotion and waste their precious human lives.
பூவும் தண்ணீரும் – flowers and water is used a metaphor to mean all the items that we use for a typical worship. Our Saint reminds us that for daily worship we need very simple items. Though the worship is so simple, many people do not realise the sacred value of worship and waste their precious human lives. He indicates that this ignorance is due to the accumulated sins in their past lives. He sympathizes that by missing the opportunity offer worship to God in this life, they are caught the cycle of birth and death.

The same message is also present in the Chapter 9 , sloka 26 in the Bhagavad Geeta.
patraṁ
puṣhpaṁ phalaṁ toyaṁ yo me bhaktyā prayachchhati
tadahaṁ bhaktyupahṛitam aśhnāmi prayatātmanaḥ
After explaining about worshipping an idol our saint lovingly sings now about another method of worship. The next method is not greater or lesser than worshipping an idol.
படமாடக் கோயில் – the temple with nice statues and pictures of God; பகவற்கு – for God. ஒன்று ஈயில் – if you offer something there; நடமாடக் கோயில் – he refers to the human beings who are embodiments of the divine who move about; நம்பர்க்கு – for the devotees of God; அங்கு ஆகா – the offering at temple will not be of useful here.
Our Saint say beautifully, if we prepare a nice
dish and make an offering in the temple, it will not reach automatically to the
devotees of God who are outside.
However,
If we offer something to a deserving devotee of God, it will not only serve them but also reach God!
The beautiful message from our Saint Thirumoolar is that serving a deserving devotee God with love is no different from worshipping God! In a way, to illustrate his point, he sings that this service to Man is superior to idol worship.
