26. The Omnipresent Divine

Our Saint Thirumoolar sings about the glory of the Divine who is Omnipresent, and how the Divine creates the Universe. He says that the Eternal Divine principle that is present everywhere, creates the human body and permeates inside the body as the soul, protects the life of the body. He explains that the Divine performs this cosmic task of creating life in the human body, protecting it and eventually destroying it, as one would fill air in a skinny bag and later release it.

எட்டுத் திசையும் அடிக்கின்ற காற்றவன்

 

The Wind that blows in the eight directions and all destinations is verily the Divine, says our Saint Thirumoolar.The air is one of His form!

வட்டத் திரையனல் மாநிலம் ஆகாயம்

The Divine is the ocean that covering the earth in all directions. He calls ocean as  திரை, the fire as அனல், and earth as மாநிலம். All these and the sky are all Divine.

ஒட்டி உயிர்நிலை என்னுமிக் காயப்பை

கட்டி அவிழ்க்கின்ற கண்ணுதல் காணுமே.

உயிர்நிலை என்னுமிக் காயப்பை   - The body which is the bag of skin that holds the soul, ஒட்டி – by binding that bag of skin in one body; கட்டி – by permeating that body with the soul and giving it life; அவிழ்க்கின்ற – later releasing that soul from the body; கண்ணுதல் -Siva who adorns his third eye of fire. காணுமே = please be aware of that Divine.

 

எட்டுத் திசையும் அடிக்கின்ற காற்றவன்

வட்டத் திரையனல் மாநிலம் ஆகாயம்

ஒட்டி உயிர்நிலை என்னுமிக் காயப்பை

கட்டி அவிழ்க்கின்ற கண்ணுதல் காணுமே.

Our Saint Thirumoolar beautifully explains in this song that the creation of the universe and the human body, the life permeating the human body, and later leaving it are all the cosmic play of the Divine. He goes on to further to sing the following.

 

குசவன் திரிகையில் ஏற்றிய மண்ணைக்

குசவன் மனத்துற்ற தெல்லாம் வனைவன்

திரிகை – Wheel

The potter kneads the clay and puts it on the wheel and circulates it. Our Saint exclaims that it give us joy to watch the potter when creates various forms and textures of the pots that he has in his mind. He says that Divine also creates the universe in the same way!

குசவனைப் போல்எங்கள் கோன்நந்தி வேண்டில்

வேண்டில் – as the Divine has decided

The potter is using the same clay though he creates various shapes and type of pots. In the same way, our Divine (Siva) creates the universe as per His will.

அசைவில் உலகம் அதுயிது வாமே.

அசைவில் – the lifeless body that has no ability to move or energy by itself without the soul permeating it. கோன்நந்தி வேண்டில் – When the Divine decides;

அதுயிது வாமே – becomes the various beings that we see and moving around us! All the various forms are only due to the Divine will.

Our Saint Thirumoolar clarifies that  when we say that the Divine wills, it means as soon as the Divine thinks in His mind.

குசவன் திரிகையில் ஏற்றிய மண்ணைக்

குசவன் மனத்துற்ற தெல்லாம் வனைவன்

குசவனைப் போல்எங்கள் கோன்நந்தி வேண்டில்

அசைவில் உலகம் அதுயிது வாமே.
